This week's Tales from the Pit blog post is going to be slightly different because we've been out of the pit for a week! We're currently in between opera productions, so this week we've had the opportunity to focus on chamber music. Opera orchestras such as the Met and Lyric Opera frequently perform outside of the pit in chamber music and other orchestra concerts, so it's neat getting that same experience. What amazes me is how playing so much opera has influenced how I perform chamber music in a positive way.
For the longest time, I have wanted to play the Mendelssohn Octet and was thrilled I finally had the opportunity to play this incredible work of chamber music! Just hours after we ended our performance of Janacek's the Cunning Little Vixen on Sunday, we jumped right into rehearsals for the octet. It was great to meet and work with some of the musicians from the MMF festival orchestra, which made up half of our group. The festival orchestra and opera orchestra are on completely opposite schedules, so it was great to collaborate with some new musicians. Friday evening, we performed the first movement in the first MMF Chamber Music Recital.

Sunday evening, I had the incredible opportunity of performing the third Brandenburg Concerto alongside violinists Yuriy Bekker and Gary Levinson in the faculty chamber music recital. After studying with both of them at this festival for the past two years, it was amazing to perform with them! Check out the post performance photos in the slideshow below:
Thank you chamber music week, for teaching us opera musicians to never take spacious rehearsal spaces for granted. Oh my goodness, a traditional orchestra rehearsal room has never felt so.... BIG after performing in an opera pit!
Opera, I've missed you! I'm so ready to get back into opera mode - we have our first orchestra rehearsal for Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking tomorrow and I CAN'T WAIT.
p.s. If you missed any of this weekend's chamber music performances, I streamed both of them via Facebook Live on my "like" page, @arviolin! Thanks to my awesome roommate for filming them!
